Hi everyone:
As part of a chapters outreach intiative, I recently announced that it was my intent to personally visit every NFFC chapter in the USA.
In addition, boxes are being mailed out to every chapter president which contain several gifts and hopefully helpful materials along with a joint message from our VP of Chapters and our Special Events Coordinator.
As I undertake this venture, I would like to share here what our chapters are doing. This is a tremendous opportunity for chapters to interact with the national Board of Directors and with each other.
My goal goal is to listen, take notes, and share your concerns, your accomplishments, and your ambitions.
My tour began this past weekend with a visit to the NorCal Chapter located in Sacramento, California.
This chapter started about 10 years ago and has about 25 active families. I attended one of their meetings and help assemble 50 bags of fun stuff to be distributed to children recovering at a local hospital. I also got to watch the chaper present a check of almost $1,000.00 to Make a Wish from a previous charity event. And they are planning a holiday party to benefit Toys for Tots.
The charitable work of this and other chapters remains an integral part of who we are and what we do. It was really gratifying to see all that the NorCal Chapter does in this respect.
And they are having fun as well! The holiday party is a pot luck which also includes a pirate gift exchange. There is an annual barbecue as well.
This chapter publishes the Nor Cal Nugget newsletter which showcases its activities. Earlier this year, NFFC Disney Legend, Bob Gurr, paid and visit and had a great time by all accounts.
I hope to get back to Sacramento, but I'm off to visit the Southeast Michigan Chapter next. I'll have an update soon.

It was a pleasure to have Gary present at the NorCal Chapter's "Giving Back" event and more encouraging to have National presence. Members had lots of questions that Gary was able to address real time !! Thanks to both Nicolasa, VP Chapters and Gary Schaengold for taking the time to visit and speak to the entire group. On November 1, 2009, I had an opportunity to visit the Southeast Michigan Chapter, located in suburban Detroit. And this time I was able to bring my favorite wife, Anita along for the ride - especially since I talked her into doing most of the driving. It's about 4 hours from our home in Dayton, Ohio - including my mandatory ice cream break.
This chapter was formed about 1995 and currently has about 50 members. Meetings are held monthly, rotating to the homes of different members. It's always so cool to see what people collect!
They have a great monthly newsletter called the Pixie Dust Press. I am hoping that our new website, being developed for a spring, 2010 roll-out, will be able to include a chapters section in which each chapter will have its own space and the ability to post chapter newsletters and pictures.
In addition to the regular meetings, some are special, such as the Halloween meeting that I attended and a Holiday Party each December. They even had a best costume contest - the kids won everything.
It was also nice to learn this chapter works with several local charities, including the Ronald McDonald House, Make a Wish chapter , Hurley Medical Center (through the Children's Medical Network), and the Detroit Children's Choir - all charities which benefit kids. Money is raised from chapter auctions. Individual members donate items out of their private collections and then other members bid on them, with all the proceeds going to the charities. And they are raising up to $3,000.00 every year doing this!
There was great interest in starting an All Disneyana Show & Sale, including having a special guest, similar to what several other chapters have done in past years. National will offer support and assistance as best we can.
When a new Disney play, movie, ice show or other special event comes to town, the Michigan chapter gathers its members and they go as a group. That sounds like a lot more fun than raking leaves or shoveling the soon-to-be dreaded snow.
They also stay on top of the Disney Parks' events, even noting when individual attractions are scheduled for refurbishment. I even learned a few new things. And I was pleased to see the entire chapter planning to participate in the upcoming "Give a day. Get a day." promotion of the Walt Disney Company Parks and Resorts.
As with my recent west coast visit, the chapter is interested in national plans to network the chapters and I let everyone know that national will do its best to help with anything we can.
I already have a few offers from other chapters for my next visit. Off to mull them over. See ya real soon,
Gary S.

Yesterday, I attended a meeting of the Plane Crazy Chapter, located in Dayton, Ohio. Actually, this trip was easy since my wife and I hosted the annual Halloween party - a wee bit late after the flu bug visited me a few weeks ago.
The Dayton Chapter started about 10 years ago as an offshoot of the Cincinnati Chapter and has done quite well on its own as a relative newcomer.
There's a saying that nothing happens in Dayton, Ohio, but when it comes to Disney fans, so not true.
For one thing, Dayton is home to Tomart, a company owned by chapter member Tom Tumbush. This is the company that publishes the Disneyana Update Magazine and Disney's Pin Trading Guide. And what a cool place to visit! Imagine the last scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark - but it's just toys, most of them Disney. Tom has authored several books on the history of Disney collectibles and it's great fun to have him around.
The biggest annual event for the chapter began in Tom's back yard, something he called Pin Trading by the Pond. Yes - there are fish and water lillies and a waterfall. Within a few years, it outgrew the back yard and evolved into Dayton Disneyana. Hundreds of people now come each spring to pin trade, shop for Disney collectibles, and visit with a Disney celebrity, such as past special guests Margaret Kerry, Bill Farmer, and Eddie Carroll.
The chapter also sponsors several needy families each Christmas and has a team called Mouse for a Cure that raises money for Relay for Life.
As a group, there have been many special trips to movies and plays. It's always more fun seeing a new Disney movie with your friends.
And, as you know, the friendships one develops as a member of this Club, especially at the chapter level, are indeed special.
Following the national Holiday Extravaganza and January's Heritage Award luncheon events, it looks like I am next headed east toward New Jersey. I'll have another update in February, 2010.
See ya real soon,
Gary S.

Come May, I will be heading west to visit the Cascade Chapter in Portland, Oregon. And I have tentative plans to visit the New Jersey Shores Chapter this summer. While I hope to be back soon with more updates, all chapters have an open invitation to contact me as I do want to visit all of you.

My favorite wife, Anita, is a huge sports fan and we recently spent several days in Orlando attending ESPN Weekend at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The visit gave us an opportunity to visit many of our NFFC - Disneyana Fan Club friends and to attend a meeting of the World Chapter on February 27.
The World Chapter is the second oldest chapter in our organization and one of the largest as well. There are over 60 families which belong and the chapter meets on a bi-monthly basis. It started in 1985 and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Congratulations!
The program for the meeting included a presentation by Brian Blackmore, an artist with the Disney Design Group. He talked about the creation of the Disney Cruise Line Mickey Mouse balloon which appeared in the 2009 Macy's Parade on Thanksgiving.
The December meeting each year consists of a holiday lunch or dinner at one of the Disney resorts.
Individual members participate in a charity auction which benefits Give Kids the World and several members regularly volunteer their time for the kids there.
There is a summer picnic each August.
During a question and answer session with the members, a suggestion was made for national to make the gift box of Disney items an annual event. I think it's a great idea and will share the suggestion with my team. There was also a request for access to quality merchandise with our new name and logo, something else I agree is a good idea to be addressed.
The World Chapter is fortunate to have access to great castmember speakers and is doing a good job at spreading the word about who we are and what we do.
My next chapter visit will be the Cascade Chapter in Portland, Oregon in May and I'll be back then with another posting.

It's a long way from Dayton, Ohio to Portland, Oregon, but well worth the double feature on the airplane to have the opportunity to visit our Cascade Chapter.
Arriving late in the evening, I stayed at a motel near the airport. The next morning, armed with a grande white mocha from a nearby Starbucks, I walked to the closest MAX station. Portland has a wonderful light rail system to get around and I love riding trains.
I headed downtown, getting off near the Saturday Market and met up with some of the chapter members. The Market was lots of fun, consisting of several blocks of booths displaying artist creations of all kinds from the northwest part of the country. And yes, I did buy something for my wife.
From there, I had to visit Voodoo Doughnuts. It had been featured on the Travel Channel as "the" place one must visit in Portland. So, I stood in line for 45 minutes outside an old wraehouse building to buy the specialty of the house: a maple bacon doughnut! Yup, that's right - it has slices of bacon on top and it's the size of a . . . well, it was lunch. And worth the wait!
My hosts then drove me down the Columbia River Gorge to view the Multnomah Falls. All I can say is that it is a spectacular sight to see those falls, and Mt. St. Helens as well.
From there, I had spaghetti dinner with the officers of the chapter, then headed on to a chapter meeting.
The Cascade Chapter is one of our longer existing chapters, having been chartered on July 17, 1990. They have about 30 families and meet monthly. The agendas typically include a guest speaker, individual members talking about a Disney related experience, and a raffle. They have a picnic each summer and the Halloween parties look like lots of fun - I got to see lots of old pictures.
Once each year, there is a club sale, with a portion of the proceeds being contributed to a scholarship fund in memory of a founding member of the chapter. $500.00 is donated to Cal Arts and the college select the recipient student. Very cool!
At the holiday season, toys are collected for a local hospital.
And the chapter participates in a multiple sclorosis walk honoring Annette Funicello.
There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm within this chapter and the members are giving back a lot in charitable works. Congratulations for all you do.
With convention upon us soon, I'm taking a break for a few months, scheduled to visit our Jersey Shores Chapter next, in August.
See ya real soon.

Last week was a side trip - a bittersweet visit to Encino, California for the memorial service for Eddie Carroll, the voice of Jiminy Cricket.
Eddie loved our Club and we loved him. At least a dozen of our members, including others from our Board of Directors, accepted Carolyn Carroll's invitation to attend A Life in Bloom, a celebration of her husband's 76 years.
I was honored to be asked to say a few words on behalf of the Club, humbled by the presence of some Hollywood notables. I'd like to share what I said to Carolyn and those in attendance:
What began over a quarter century ago as the NFFC has evolved into today's Disneyana Fan Club.
We are an organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich legacy of Walt Disney. Our common goal is to provide Disneyana enthusiasts of all ages from around the world news, information, and events that enhance their experience with, and love of, all things Disney.
The people who spend their lives creating the magic are truly special. They understand and appreciate their connection to childhood memories which we as adults cherish.
Behind the voices of iconic animated disney characters are individuals whose personnas become a mirror of the personality of their character.
Once upon a time, Jiminy Cricket was appointed by the Blue Fairy to serve as Pinocchio's official conscience and he has advised the child in our hearts for generations.
Eddie Carroll voiced Jiminy Cricket for the past 4 decades and he was Jiminy because he believed.
As a staunch supporter of the Disneyana Fan Club, Eddie was instrumental a few years ago in assembling a seminar panel for the fab 5 voices: Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto. For the only time in history, all of the voices were on the same stage together and Eddie understood the significance of that moment.
And Eddie graciously donated his time on several occasions to help support our charitable causes, such as the Ryman Arts Foundation. He even auctioned himself off last year to ride Pinocchio at Disneyland with the high bidder.
For all these reasons, it was time to recognize his legacy and induct eddie as one of our Disney legends. At a luncheon to be held on July 16, I would hope that Carolyn and the family will join the Disneyana Fan Club as we again celebrate the lifetime accomplishments of this very special person.
We all know these words:
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you Why? Because Eddie said so. and it's so true. Remember that.
Thank you. |

I realize this is an old thread but I was enjoying reading it and it seems your travels ended abruptly, did you continue visiting all the chapters? With any luck there will be a Vegas chapter soon for you to visit too :-)

Hi:
My travels have not stopped. As we geared up for the July Disneyanamania Convention, I needed to direct my attention in that direction. And airfare gets expensive during the summer vacation season. The Club does not cover the cost of airfare for my visits.
I have a visit scheduled for next week to the Jersey Shores Chapter. Later this month, I will visit Chapter at the Park in orange County, California. In September, I am visiting the Studio Chapter in Los Angeles. And in November, I travel to Seattle and British Columbia to visit those two chapters over the course of a single weekend.
If we get a chapter in Las Vegas, I'll be glad to visit.
So stay tuned.
