And the Winner Is...

Mickena Guillaume of Cedar Rapids Iowa, designer of the new Disneyana Fan Club logo.

Mickena’s design, full of fun, fantasy, and whimsy—just like the Disneyana Fan Club—was one of over 50 entries in our New Logo Design contest. NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club V.P. Media Relations and Communications, Chuck Oberleitner, supervised the competition.

Hand-drawn entries were scanned and, along with digital submissions, assembled into a password-only accessible online album for review by contest judges across the country. To help ensure impartiality, only a unique ID number identified each entry. Artists’ names were withheld, and judges, while encouraged to discuss their feelings about the various submissions, were asked not to identify anyone whose work they might know of or recognize.

The members of the Media Relations and Communications (MR&C) committee—Bob Welbaum, Scarlett Stahl, Greg McNaughten, David Schiller, and Joshua Benesh—participated in the first selection round. In a process similar to what’s known as “Instant Runoff Voting,” the committee was asked to vote for their top five choices from among the contenders.

Once the MR&C committee’s votes had been tabulated, that information, along with the access codes for the online album, was given to the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Board of Directors. Each of the members of the Board was asked to review the entries and the MR&C committee’s recommendations and then submit their top five choices.

In the final analysis, entry number DFCLT-1008 was the clear first place choice by a margin of three to one. Additionally, in the overall voting, across all five choices, it was the single most often selected entry.

On February 6, Chuck Oberleitner put a motion before the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Board of Directors to formally adopt entry DFCLT-1008 as the official new logo of Disneyana Fan Club.

On February 14, NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club President Gary Schaengold announced he had received a report from Secretary Koko Witz, which stated that the motion to adopt the new logo had been adopted by a vote of seven in favor of adoption, four opposed, and two abstentions.

Up until that time, only two people knew the identity of the designer of entry DFCLT-1008: MR&C V.P. Oberleitner, and board and MR&C committee member Joshua Benesh. You see, Mickena Guillaume is Joshua’s sister.

Both Mickena and big brother Joshua were excited to learn that she was the designer of the new Disneyana Fan Club logo.

“As you can see, Disney has not only inspired my creativity as an artist,” said Mickena, “but also helped to shape who I am as an individual. Winning this contest means more to me than can be imagined, to be part of something you have always had, have, and always will have such a great passion and love for...it doesn't get better!”

There will be more with and about Mickena and her winning logo entry in an upcoming edition of the FantasyLine Express.

NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Names 2010 Legends

The annual NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Legends Luncheon will take place this year on Friday July 16 during the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club DisneyanaMania Convention and All Disneyana Show and Sale 2010. It will be held in the Cabo San Lucas Ballroom of the Anaheim Crowne Plaza Resort in Garden Grove, California. This year’s honorees are,

Eddie Carroll, whose achievements in the entertainment field have spanned every area of show business - the Broadway stage, motion pictures, television, movies of the week, a weekly series and especially his acclaimed one-man show Jack Benny - Laughter In Bloom. His original Jack Benny production opened in Los Angeles to unanimous praise from audiences and critics alike. For Disney fans, his most treasured role has been that of the voice of Jiminy Cricket, the conscience of The Walt Disney Company. In 1973 Eddie Carroll took over for Cliff Edwards and has regularly lent his voice to the inspiring little cricket with the heart of gold and the wisdom of the ages. Eddie says of all his roles, this one has brought him the most joy.

Mark Henn, a Disney animator, who began his career in feature animation with Mickey’s Christmas Carol. After that, he worked on such short subjects as Roller Coaster Rabbit, The Prince and the Pauper, and Trail Mix-Up, along with such features as The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver and Company, and The Rescuers Down Under. He then worked as the supervising animator for the Florida teams that drew Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Belle in Beauty and the Beast. That work was followed by his contributions to some landmark Disney features: he was the supervising animator for Jasmine in Aladdin, Young Simba in The Lion King, the title character in Mulan, and, most recently, Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. Mark also directed the award-winning short subject John Henry.

Wayne Jackson, a Disney Imagineer was the director for theme park development, manufacturing, and installation of show and ride equipment for 21 years. He started his Imagineering career in 1965 as a technician in show mechanical, developing tooling for the animated figures and prototyping of ride vehicles. He subsequently worked on all the theme parks up through the opening of Tokyo DisneySea. During that time, he held a variety of positions: among others, they included directing the installation of all shows and rides for Tokyo Disneyland. He also worked as Director of Show Quality Standards, establishing the first show quality program for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland. Before retiring in 2002, his last position was as director of show systems for Tokyo DisneySea.

Deck the Halls?

That’s right, it’s never too early to plan to spend some time with family, friends, and your fellow NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club members around the Holidays. Special Events coordinator Anita Schaengold wants to let everyone know that if you thought last year’s NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Disney World Holiday Extravaganza was a yuletide blast, “you’re gonna absolutely love this year’s event!”

Save the dates. NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Disney World Holiday Extravaganza 2010 takes place December 10 through 13. Where else but at the parks and resorts of Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Ya’ll.

About NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club

NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich legacy of Walt and Roy Disney and their company of brilliant artists and storytellers. Our common goal is to provide Disneyana enthusiasts of all ages from around the world with news, information, and events that enhance their experience with, and love of, all things Disney.

This goal is achieved through the publication of a member newsletter, the FantasyLine Express, and by hosting national and international members, along with local NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Chapters, where members can trade information, learn more about their favorite collectables, hold group outings and activities, and just have fun!

We are equally dedicated to sharing Walt Disney’s artistic legacy as well as Disney magic with those in need. Through a series of charitable fund-raising events, the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club helps to support inner-city arts programs and to assist families and children affected by major illness to find a little happiness at Disney parks around the world.

By far, the biggest and most popular means of expanding the magic are the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club All Disneyana Conventions, where members are informed and entertained by Imagineers, animators, entertainers, authors, and artists from every facet of the Walt Disney Company, along with many independent Disney experts. Additionally, the NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club All Disneyana Show and Sales, which are open to the public, provide vast exposure to Disneyana and an unparalleled experience for autograph collectors.
